For Hillsborough County Commissioner, District 6 (Countywide)
My campaign is about, “Putting out the fire on our tax dollars” and I mean that sincerely. In 2006 our county budget was 2.7 billion dollars, and now just two years later it’s $4 billion dollars (not including the City of Tampa’s budget of $761 Million). It is no wonder that we now have to cut millions from our current budget. With a population of just over one million (1,157,738 according to the 2006 Census Bureau Est.; this equates to $3,455.00 per every man, woman, and child who live in Hillsborough County). We can no longer afford to operate without implementing fiscal restraints. As a candidate for Hillsborough County Commissioner District 6, I see challenges which require proactive leadership, such as the need for the creation of additional public-private partnerships to deal with the many challenges threatening our economic well-being. We also must address the grid lock faced by our commuters. Mass transportation must be included in our growth plans; ie, light railI coupled with infrastructure improvements. One source of revenue for this could stem from the tourist tax along with federal dollars. I wish you could see Hillsborough County through my eyes. If you could, you would see a county with natural resources to protect, and an educated work force with many opportunities for our children and grandchildren.
My vision for Hillsborough County government...
* Fiscal responsibility
* Proactive leadership
* Eliminate traffic congestion issues by implementing workable solutions.
* Curtail violent youth crime.
* Replenish water resources.
My Grandfather, James Haskins, was a Tampa Police Officer in the 1930’s. Born in Georgia, he moved to Florida where he met my grandmother Agnelia Benita Lopez a Florida native. They had nine children, all born and raised in Tampa. Hillsborough County has changed drastically over the years since the days of my grandparents. With explosive growth and the challenges created by such growth, Hillsborough County has much more to offer, but growth must be balanced and accommodated with infrastructure, while respecting the environment.
A native of Tampa, I am proud to have been raised and educated here. As a Sales Manager for Bill Currie Ford for the past 17 years, I have worked with many people in the Tampa Bay area and have developed a unique understanding of the plight of many. These experiences have led me to serve as a member on the Board of Directors of “Wheels of Success Inc.” as a means of helping those less fortunate. Wheels of Success is dedicated to providing personal transportation solutions, by partnering with the community in a circle of support to keep people working and sustaining their independence. I also serve on the Board of Directors of the “Veterans’ Day Parade Group, Inc.”, which is responsible for staging the Tampa Bay Veterans’ Parade each year. I am committed to my community and am constantly striving to make a difference within it. In addition to my duties as a Sales Manager for Bill Currie Ford, I also manage the business affairs of Tampa Laser Touch, LLC and The Electrolysis Institute of Tampa, LLC that my wife Rita and I own. As a life long native son of this beautiful county I have the passion to make Hillsborough County a better place to live and raise our families.
